Harry Kane smashed home a long-range 'knuckleball' goal, but Damian Szymanski's late equaliser ensured England only drew 1-1 with Poland on Wednesday night.
The Three Lions faced a tough task heading to Warsaw for the World Cup qualifier and ultimately were unable to retain their 100 per cent record in Group I.
Before the match, Robert Lewandowski led his Poland side in pointing to the RESPECT badges on their shirt sleeves while some of their fans booed England for taking the knee.
On the pitch, England struggled to dictate the tempo as they had done in recent outings.
Poland looked good in possession with Lewandowski coming close to lifting the ball over Pickford on the half-hour mark.
John Stones went down injured 10 minutes before the interval but continued after treatment.
The half ended in disarray as the two sets of players clashed following the referee's half-time whistle which resulted in Harry Maguire and Kamil Glik being booked.
Maguire hit the post with a header only to see the offside flag go up against Raheem Sterling as England still struggled to create clear-cut chances.
The deadlock was finally broken by Kane, who moved onto 41 goals for his country with a fine long-range strike which caught out Wojciech Szczesny.
"I think Szczesny will be really disappointed with that," Stuart Pearce reacted on talkSPORT commentary.
But Jim Proudfoot added: "It was like a Jimmy Anderson in-swinger with a new ball.
"The knuckleball left Szczesny with no chance."
In the end, the goal did not prove definitive as Szymanski's stoppage-time header snatched a point for Poland.
Gareth Southgate's men still sit top of the qualifying group with 16 points, while Albania sit second on 12 points with Poland third on 11 points.
